| Communal clashes mar Eid celebrations in Kishtwar | | Army called in, curfew imposed | | Asif Iqbal Naik KISHTWAR, Aug 9: Eid festivities turned sour at this mountainous town as communal clashes broke out causing extensive damages to the public and Government property and resulting into death of one person. According to eye witness account, trouble erupted following an altercation between two youth when a religious procession, on its way to Eidgah was passing through Kuleed area of the town. The altercation soon flared up and resulted into stone pelting, following which the youths from majority community went on rampage and set shops and vehicles standing at Kuleed Chowk on fire. In retaliation, the youths from minority community set few houses and shops of majority community on fire. In violent clashes, over 100 people from both sides including over two dozen police personals also got injured while one person identified as 24 year old Arvind Kumar son of Des Raj Bhagat was killed. Many shops and residential houses were gutted as miscreants indulged in indiscriminate arson and rioting. Security forces fired in air and lobbed tear gas shell to control the mob, but failed to bring the situation under control as a result of which the administration handed over Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas to army and also imposed curfew in the District. |
