58,680 participate in electoral awareness drive of EC

Jammu, Dec 10: An awareness programme for electoral awareness and participation was organised in the district at 147 Panchayat headquarters and 2 urban towns where a record number of 58,680 electors and youth participated.
During day long proceedings, voter lists were read out, informative sessions on enrollment procedure and modifications in voter list as well as need for strengthening democracy were organised across the districts. This mammoth exercise was carried out under systematic voters' education and electoral participation (SVEEP) plan as per guidelines of Election Commission of India for enhancing electoral turn out in forthcoming Parliamentary and State Assembly elections. It has also created record of largest number of venues and highest participation on same day under SVEEP plan.
Huge gathering was witnessed especially greater participation of women and youth was witnessed at majority of stations. At every station, 250-600 people participated.
District Election Officer Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary accompanied by SSP M S Chouhan, ADC Rajinder Singh Tara, ACD Joginder Rai and other senior officers inaugurated this campaign at Mini Secretariat premises and addressed the gathering which was followed by display of voter list and interaction with electors present at the function. Later they toured various Panchayats in Talwara, Pouni, Laiter, Bhambla and Ransoo. ACR Tilak Raj and SDM Ashwani Khajuria lead the teams in Arnas and Mahore.
About 1.30 Lakh posters were distributed among the public which included the message from Election Commission, informative material related to enrolment, importance of voting and promoting as a voluntary compulsory duty and fundamental right. All these posters and banners were sponsored by business establishments, Municipalities, social organisations and NGOs.
Apart from 151 observers and 23 Nodal Officers, 8 teams of 32 district officers carried out random inspections at the venues for reporting proceedings and ensuring fairness of exercise. Observers recorded the proceedings at each venue and presented to nodal officers. More than 4800 additions/deletions and modifications were reported by the Booth Level Officers. All 301 polling station and 25 Municipal Wards were linked to 149 venues for concentrated efforts to create awareness about greater electoral participation. Students also organised rallied at more than dozen locations and mock poll was also organised.
Two special teams were deputed for awareness of pilgrims visiting the famous shrines of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Shri Shive Khori in the district.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) J&K Umang Narula in his message has congratulated the District Election Officer and entire team of district administration for this historic exercise in state and hoped that this will be translated into greater turnout in elections for wider participation to ensure a vibrant democracy in state.
District Election Officer informed that administration was hopeful of increasing the poll percentage by 12-15 percent in this mountainous terrain having sparse population.
