| Modi's rally, poll results: "Weak" Cong to follow dictates of "assertive" NC | | Rejoicing Congress failure, NC looks to play Big Bro | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 10: Unprecedented turn out in the Lalkar Rally of Narendra Modi followed by shameful debacle of Congress party in the Assembly elections of four states has forced "weak" Congress to follow dictates of its coalition partner National Conference. Two important decisions taken by the ruling coalition on December 9 were indicators of the weakness of Congress party. The ruling National Conference had promised to take decision in the Cabinet meeting on 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution but no announcement was made regarding extending this amendment in Jammu and Kashmir in the Cabinet meeting which was held on December 9. Instead of taking any decision, it was decided that this issue would be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting. After visit of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in the month of November this year, it was decided that state government would implement relevant clauses of 73rd amendment of Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir in next Cabinet meeting but no concrete step was taken. Sources said that National Conference leadership has realized that Congress has become weak after Lalkar rally followed by debacle of the party in four assembly elections so there was no need to give any importance to Congress's suggestions. NC leadership has realized that leadership of weak Congress leadership has no option but follow line of NC so there is no need to give any importance to threats and warning of Congress leadership. Furthermore, NC leadership is very much aware that faction ridden Congress leadership is not in a position to implement its own agenda on the government so it is better to allow Congress ministers to enjoy power but not implement party's agenda. Decision of the Privilege Committee of the Legislative Council to ask former Army Chief General VK Singh to appear in person before the Committee on 9th January, 2014 to explain his position with regard to the privilege motion pending against him in the House is also indication of the weakness of Congress party. Congress leadership was not interested to further take this issue but it was all due to the pressure of the NC leadership that Privilege Committee decided to serve notice to General VK Singh. It can therefore be seen this way as well- Made to keep low by the Congress for the last four years, National Conference is now set to dictate terms to its coalition partners after it suffered humiliating defeats in the four states recently. This is being conceded by none other than the leaders from within both the allies. "NC will now run the government on its own terms and will have major say in alliance as Congress has been wiped out in the major states. Now Congress can't ask us what to do," said a senior NC leader. NC leader said the results have also eroded the possibility of holding Assembly elections in the state along with Parliamentary elections which the Congress was coercing NC Into. NC leadership holds the view that now the Congress can't even think on early Assembly elections. Congress's routing in the four states has also given much needed political breather to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who could use remaining time of his term to strengthen his own party rather than focusing much on the issues within the coalition. However, Congress especially the state unit of the party feels that NC is talking out of frustration and in an attempt to dissuade public opinion from its own sliding graph, it is focusing on the defeat of the Congress party. Party unit of the State still holds the view that assembly elections are held on local issues and Congress has done its ground work. |
