| Why is Rattanpuri silent? | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 25: While broadcasters have opted for politics to 'change' the condition of the people, Rajya Sabha member, GN Rattanpuri has decided to remain silent for the time being. Dismayed by the National Conference and its leadership, the former broadcaster had vowed to expose the duplicity of Omar Abdullah. He even considered surrendering the Rajya Sabha seat. According to sources, Rattanpuri even held talks with Omar's 'enemies' causing a stir in the `kitchen cabinet ' (Sheikh Family) of the organization. He was asked to quit. Omar gave vent to his anger at a public function. "Rattanpuri has no business to be in the National Conference now. He should immediately surrender Rajya Sabha seat, which we had given him despite the fact that he had secured 200 odd votes in Assembly elections. If he (Mr Ratanpuri) is a self-respecting man, if he has a millimeter of self-respect, he should first quit his Rajya Sabha seat and then issue statements. However, if he has no self- respect then he can continue in the National Conference." Following Chief Minister's public outburst, Rattanpuri had also decided to go public on Omar duplicity. He even had plans to persuade more NC leaders to resign. Omar was irked by his remark over Article 370. Rattanpuri had said that the people who talk about Article 370 were fooling Kashmiris. Omar had made clear in a forceful speech in presence of the Prime Minister that the Article could be eroded over his `dead body'. Sources further said that the former broadcaster had hinted at joining Congress. "The Government of India is more sympathetic to Kashmiris than the State Government", he had said. Sources revealed that Rattanpuri had held negotiations with the Congress leaders. While the outcome of the negotiations was not known, Rattanpuri's silence at this point of time when everybody is talking is being perceived as a 'political stunt'. What is he up to? If a broadcaster does not talk, he is not doing justice to himself, believe political experts. |
