SRINAGAR, Jan 25: A day ahead of Republic Day celebrations the summer capital of the state was virtually sealed by police and security forces with people being checked and frisked at various intersections of the city. Extraordinary security arrangements have also been put in place at the other district headquarters and towns of Kashmir valley.
By Saturday evening Srinagar wore a deserted look as people reached their home early with very few among them visible on the roads by the time of dusk. Shopkeepers downed their shutters early than the normal closure and same was the case with people discharging their obligations as employees in the public as well as private sector.
Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel erected barricades at many places and subjected people travelling in vehicles to random checking and frisking. The movement of people on the city roads was very thin and it was quite evident that most of the people had preferred to remain at home fearing security troubles.
By late afternoon police and CRPF personnel completely sealed the road leading towards Lalded hospital from the Bakshi Stadium and nobody was allowed to move on the road. Pertinently, Bakshi Stadium is the venue for the main Republic Day celebrations in Srinagar. A senior minister of the cabinet takes salute at the parade in which contingents of police and other agencies take part.
Police and CRPF personnel have been on duty at the stadium for the last many days and their number was increased by many times today. Services of sharp shooters have also been availed in order to ensure that republic day celebrations pass off without any incident. Many houses in the nearby localities of Bakshi Stadium have been taken over by security forces personnel who are keeping an eye on the overall security scenario.
Reports reaching here said that barricades have been erected at various points entering into and leaving the summer capital of the state. Security agencies are not taking any chance with regard to safety and security of people taking part in the Republic Day celebrations. It is due to this reason that extraordinary security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth culmination of Republic Day celebrations in Srinagar.
Police and other security agencies have also been put on alert at the other district headquarters and towns where the Republic Day celebrations are being held. Checking, frisking and body searches are being conducted so as to ensure that no untoward incident takes place on Republic Day. People in the country side have also limited their activities over the past few days and they too are worried when it comes to security arrangements made in connection with Republic Day.
