| SaMaPa-2014: Santoor maestro Abhay Sopori enthralls audience | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 12 : Son of the soil, the eminent music maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori on the Day 3 of the Ninth Annual festival of classical, sufi and folk music SaMaPa-2014, left audience spell bound by his master stroke on his instrument. SaMaPa Aalap Festival (SAF) 2014 is presentation from Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts (SaMaPa) in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Jammu & Kashmir Police and Department of Tourism, Jammu. Today's concert was held at Army Public School, Ratnuchak was attended by more than 500 students and a number of art lovers including the Chief Guest Mrs Jasbir Brar, Principal Mrs Sonal Sharma, eminent musicologist and senior music critics of the country including Pt Vijay Shankar Mishra and Pt Ravindra Misra, musicians Ragini Rainu, Zunain Halim Khan and many other music connoisseurs. The programme began with Saraswati Vandana presented by the Army school choir featuring a number of students under the guidance of Anil Sumbria followed by the traditional lamp lighting ceremony by the artists and the eminent guests. Santoor maestro Abhay selected Raga Charukeshi, which is equally famous in the Hindustani as well as Carnatik style, followed by compositions in Madhyalaya Teentaal, Drut Ektaal and Atidrut Teentaal. He made the students sing with him different compositions and patterns including a traditional Sufi Tarana of Sopori family. Abhay's recital demonstrated his great command on the instrument, high technical virtuosity with various styles created by his father and Guru, the great music legend Pt Bhajan Sopori. He was accompanied on Tabla by Durjay Bhaumik. Earlier Abhay spoke to the children and asked them to participate in all cultural activities and make music as a full time interest. Mrs Brar acknowledged the efforts of SaMaPa in conducting this special festival for the youth of the State and complimented Abhay Sopori for his spellbinding recital. She, along with the principal, presented mementos to the artists. |
