JAMMU, Feb 12: Despite rise in crime rate, the police have projected a rosy picture of the situation in the city of temples notwithstanding recent armed robberies. A police official was found praising his team for cracking some burglaries and burglars associated with these robberies. While police utterly failed to crack robbery on gun point in which cash Rs 2 lakh and some valuables looted from the house of Supreme Court Advocate, S. S. Lehar, police officials were seen in good mood as doled too much self (police)-praise, but not enough to repair the damages done to the sense of security among people of winter capital after 'gun point robberies.'
Bugling praise to his different teams to have managed to crack various burglary cases, in a media conference at Gandhi Nagar Police Station on the other day, a senior police official apparently fell short of words while accrediting his teams to have cracked some old theft cases.
Sources further claimed that police remand of most of the accused of the cases for which a senior police official chaired was over and most of the cases have been already cracked by different newspapers. A senior police official while claiming to have cracked some theft cases with the arrest of five burglars besides recovery of 320 grams gold, 263 grams Silver, 5 scooters, 2 cars and cash Rs.1,23,000/- against some cases pertaining registered at different police stations.
Addressing a press conference, a senior police official said that five thieves identified as Keher Singh alias Sonu of Digiana, Himanshu and Ranjeet Singh both residents of New Plot, Hitler and Azad both residents of Bihar and presently staying at Trikua Nagar were held after strenuous efforts. He further said that they were involved in various theft cases of Gandhi Nagar, Gangyal, Bahu Fort police stations.
"Police recovered 320 grams gold and 263 grams silver, 5 scooters, 2 cars and cash Rs.1,23,000 from their possession", said high ranked police official adding that all the accused are in police custody and further investigation is going on. According to sources, all the cases were earlier cracked by the police and today just pats self-press conference was organized. However, police remand of most of the accused is over.
Pertinent to mention here that in new modus operandi, the burglars now are indulged in 'life threatening thefts' which have given scary nights to Jammuites as on January 18, this year some robbers robbed a woman of gold ornaments and cash by taking her on gunpoint at Talab Tillo area. The incident occurred when victim, wife of Dr Sunil Mahajan, resident of 148, Garden Avenue Talab Tillo was stopped near her house and the gunmen snatched her purse. The accused also pulled out the cash from her purse and fled away.
FIR 9/14 under section 458, 384, 506 CrPC and 3/25 Arms Act has been registered at Nowabad Police Station. Similarly, in another robbery which was executed on gun point in the house of SS Lehar, Supreme Court advocate, a prominent Urdu writer and poet on February 8, gold ornaments worn by his wife and Rs two lakh in cash was looted at his Maheshpura residence.
In another incident two motorcycle borne youth snatched a purse from a lady who was on her way to her home from Janipur on a scooter along with her husband near Mian Dido Chowk. The bag contained Rs 13,000 in cash, ATM Cards of J&K Bank and PNB, Driving license, PAN Cards, voter cards, all other membership cards and one gold locket of Lord Shiva.
