State Wushu Championship from March 27
3 Wushu players selected for India camp

JAMMU, Mar 1: On the basis of their performance in the recently held 22nd Senior National Wushu Championship in Rajasthan, three boys from the state have been selected for the India camp for the 17th Asian Games hosted by Korea in September.
These three selected boys are Pradeep Singh, Arun Singh and Sunil Atri. While Arun Singh bagged silver medal, Pradeep Singh and Sunil secured bronze in the Nationals.
Now, these players have been called to attend the coaching camp to be held at NIS Patiala from March 15. General secretary of the J&K Wushu Association, Kuldeep Handoo has been named coach for the camp, a handout issued here today informed.
Earlier, in the National Championship, J&K team returned with four medals, including two silver. A good number of nine boys had lost at the quarterfinals stages of the competition.
Meanwhile, as per a handout issued here today, the Association has decided to hold 10th State Wushu Championship at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here from March 27.


Unified Sports event organised at Indira Memorial Academy

Jammu, Mar 1: To sensitize normal students about hidden potential of intellectually disabled and to generate a feeling of compassion, Special Olympics Bharat J&K Chapter today organized Unified Sports event at Indira Memorial Academy Jassore, RS Pura.
Six special athletes of Prerna Institute of Rehabilitation and Research run by Sahyog India, who were trained by the expert coaches, participated in the badminton matches played with the players of Indira Memorial Academy.
During opening of the event, Area Director of Special Olympics Lalit Kumar in detail discussed about various type of disabilities among the children including Intellectual disability, down syndrome, hearing impairment. He stressed upon the students to give special emphasis and to give proper care to special athletes, so that same would also be considered as part and parcel of the society and their potential could be explored through the medium of sports, which was the ultimate goal of special Olympics International.
“Generally such type of disabled children are considered as insane and non productive in any field of life and in local parlance called as “Jhalla”, but actually these students are specially disable and every such children has some hidden talent which needs to be nourished in proper way as they were differently abled to perform miracles which an ordinary person could not”, Kumar said.
The purpose of organizing Unified Sports, is absolutely focused to create awareness at ground level, to enhance their capabilities and sensitivity level of the general masses, towards these special athletes to live with dignity and honour, he said.
Hearing impaired Shoba Kumari, Intellectually disable Komal Kumari, Ravinder Kumar, Jasdeep Singh, Amit Kumar and down syndrome Rakesh Kumar participated in the event.
Coaches of Special Olympics including Iqbal Kour, Prabjot Kour, Sunita Kumari, Kamaljeet Kour, Soma Devi, Trishna, Rajeshwari, Radha Rani were also present on the occasion.

Students of APS Damana participates in "Junior Robotryst 2014"

Jammu, Mar 1: Students of Army Public School Damana participated in "Junior Robotryst 2014" conducted by IIT Delhi in National Capital.
As per press release, 3 teams comprising 12 students from Army Public School Damana were part of the three days long completion.
More than 800 teams participated in open round which had come from different Educational Institution all over India. The teams from the school qualified this round and made their place for the finals round after qualifying quarter final and semifinal rounds. In the final round all the three teams from school performed very well by exhibiting their knowledge and potential which helped them in scoring a good rank in overall competition. The teams were awarded a certificate of honour for participating in National Junior Robotryst 2014.
The School Management, Principal Dr Renu Gupta and the teachers complimented the achievement of these students and encouraged them for their participation in future endeavour.



South Africa colts lift ICC U-19 World Cup beating Pakistan

Dubai, Mar 1: South Africa lifted the ICC U-19 World Cup defeating Pakistan by six wickets in a low-scoring final encounter here on Saturday.
Batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry 131 in 44.3 overs with right arm medium pacer Corbin Bosch grabbing four for 15 in 7.3 overs. In reply, South Africa chased down the target in 42.1 overs with Aiden Markram (66) and Greg Oldfield (40) being the chief contributors.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan were reeling at 72 for seven when Zafar Gohar (22) and Amad Butt (37) added 45 runs for the eighth wicket stand to take the team total past 100-run mark. Most of the top order batsmen like captain Sami Aslam (16), Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Hasan Raza (2) (15) were guilty of playing poor shots.
Once the top order was blown away, it was difficult for the middle and lower order to repair and also build a substancial score on a big day. The pressure was telling and Pakistan wilted under it. While chasing a low score was not a big ask but Proteas took a lot of time but achieved the target. Markram-Oldfield added 71 runs for the fourth wicket to ensure a smooth sailing for the champion team.
Brief Scores: Pakistan 131 in 44.3 overs (Amad Butt 37, Zafar Gohar 22, Corbin Bosch 4/15). South Africa 134/4 in 42.1 overs (Aiden Makrram 66, Greg Oldfield 40). SA u-19 won by 6 wickets.


Closing ceremony of Sports, Fitness Week

JAMMU, Mar 1: Closing Ceremony of Sports and Fitness week held in campus of T.S Public School on March 2014. Different sports activities were played by the staff and the students. Rahul Pikhan of Class IX was declared the Best Sports Boy and Madeep Kour of Class IX was declared the Best Sports Girl. The Chairperson, Pooja Malhotra, encouraged the students to come forward and take interest in sports and inculcate brotherhood, healthy sense of competition and sportsmanship. She gave away medals and certificates to the winners. She further said that the purpose of organising such competitions was to channelize the energy of the students in the right direction. Staff also participated in various activities. Divleen Sethi and Nisha Bangotra were adjudged 1st the Three Legged Race and Obstacle Race respectively. The week long sports events were organised under the expert guidance of Headmistress, Rita Jain and were conducted by Sports Coach, Sunny Nanda.


Kushwant of Haryana bags Shiv Khori dangal title

JAMMU, Mar 1: Wrestler Kushwant of Rohtak in Harayana lifted the 16th Shiv Khori Kesari dangal beating Jodha of Attari in Amritsar in the easy main bout that lasted for just three minutes at Government High School Ransoo, the base camp of Shiv Khori Board in Pouni block of district Reasi.
This dangal was part of the three-day Shiv Khori Mela, organized by J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in collaboration with J&K Tourism Department and Ransoo Dangal Committee.
Mela Officer, Tehsildar Reasi (Settlement), Daljit Singh was chief guest, who presented the title to Wrestler Kushwant. President of J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma presided. Naib Tehsildar Pouni, Munshi Ram, SDPO, Ishtak Ahmed Kashu, SHO Ransoo, KD Sharma and CRPF officer, Giraj Singh were guests of honour.
Prominent among others present were Bansi Lal, Mubarik Singh, Kewal Krishan, Swarn Singh, Bharat Singh, Bhagwan Singh and Swarn Singh.
Winner of the main bout, Kushwant presented with a cash prize of Rs 13,000 while Jodha got Rs 9,000.
In all, 35 bouts played in the dangal. The second main bout went to Johny of Attari, who bet Kulbir Singh of Kot Bhawal Jammu while Charrat of Attari beat Amir Khan of Bajrangi Akhara Jammu to bag third bout. The fourth bout bagged by Murad Ali of Domana who defeated Dilllar Khan of J&K Police.
Other Results: Babba of Attari beat Balwan of Mahore. Dalbir of Mohore beat Javed Khan of Jammu, Billu of Kot Bhawal beat Hossiar Singh of Mohore and Babba of Jammu beat Anil Kumar (Mohanu) of J&K Police.
Ransoo Dangal Committee members and technical officials who helped for the conduct of Vishal Dangal included Sarpanch Kewal Krishan, Sarpanch Paul Chand, Sarpanch Swarn Singh, Sarpanch Bharat Singh, Bhagwan Singh, Ramesh Chander Kholi, Karan Singh, Mohan Lal, Ramesh Chander Sharma, Sansar chand, Tilak Raj Kholi, Kapoor Singh, Capt. Lehar Singh, Vijay Singh (Biju), Mohd. Fareed, Ram Krishan, Abdul Rehman, Raj Hussian and Murli Dhar (Munna).

Hardeep, Bandeep make 50s in J&K's 2-run loss to Services

JAMMU, Mar 1: Middle order batsmen, Hardeep Singh and Bandeep Singh bravely fought the Services bowlers but could not give finishing touch to their innings thereby lost the game by a wafer thin margin of two runs in the North Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at Palam-A ground, Model Sports Complex, Delhi.
Needing 172 runs to win after the match was reduced to 32 overs because of delayed start, J&K could make 169 runs losing nine wickets. Hardeep Singh and Bandeep Singh fought lone battle, adding 115 runs to the total completing their half centuries.
Earlier, J&K made a poor beginning when they lost four wickets in first five overs for just 29 runs. Star batsmen, Adil Reshi and Shubam Khajuria could not open their account while Ian Dev Singh bowled for two runs. Skipper, Parvez Rasool too went to the pavilion adding only six runs.
It was followed by brilliant knocks from Hardeep and Bandeep, who brought the total from struggling 72 for five to 149 for six. Both these batsmen completed their half centuries with Hardeep making 77-ball 60 runs while Bandeep made unbeaten 55 (off 52 balls). Earlier, opener, MK Dogra contributed 35-ball 29 runs to the total.
A Sinha and S Yadav were most successful bowlers from Services with four and three wickets respectively.
Earlier, put to bat after J&K won the toss and opted to field, Services made 171 runs for eight wickets in 32 overs. PS Paliwal was highest scorer with 54 runs. From J&K, Ram Dayal, Parvez Rasool and Waseem Raza shared two wickets each.
