| Beyond taxing toll plazas: Prestigious NH remains fatally bumpy | | | Sandeep Bhat
Jammu, Mar 18: In the backdrop of Raj Thakeray's crusade against toll plazas across highways in Maharashtra hitting national headlines, similar resentment is brewing amongst the commuters on Jammu-Delhi Highway where several toll plazas are charging handsome money from various vehicles despite the fact that the condition of the highway especially between Jallandhar and Panipat is is in poor shape and there are many undefined diversions. A group of young commuters who recently returned from Delhi by road complained that the Toll plazas of the national highway authority of India have been collecting toll tax from vehicles without ensuring their safety as the highway was in poor condition at several places. "Nobody is averse to pay the toll tax, but it should be the prime responsibility of the NHAI to ensure safety of the commuters" said Vinod Nagpal, adding, "There are so many undefined diversions at the stretch from Jallandhar to Panipat which are even difficult to make out in the dark". It is pertinent to mention here that the mega project of joining the length and breadth of the country through the national highways though nearing completion has certain grey areas which threaten fatal mishaps. |
