Coalition drowns Cong-NC
`Alliance workers responsible for defeat'

Srinagar, May16; While conceding defeat even days before the counting, the fragile ruling National Conference-Congress alliance is hit by sever credibility crisis as all the six seats in Jammu and Kashmir have gone the opposition way. Though the war of words for alleged cross voting had started even during the polling, however, the ground swell win by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and BJP in J&K has eventually brought the coalition at the brink of collision. By blaming each other for cross voting over past few days, the coalition had already conceded its defeat but the worst kind of defeat of the ruling alliance is certainly not about the cross voting but about the performance of the coalition in the state. By accusing each other of cross voting, the ruling alliance partners are actually trying to hide their inefficiency, inability, insensitivity and their failure in providing a good government to the people of the state. If the historical win of the NDA at centre is attributed to the failure of the UPA in governing, the same argument with even more stress could be valid for analyzing the defeat of the ruling NC-Congress coalition of the state. However, blaming each other for cross voting if seen from a layman's perspective too leads to the conclusion that neither NC nor Congress could motivate people (voters) to vote for the alliance candidates essentially because the resentment among the people had already shacked the faith of the people in general and the NC-Congress workers/voters in particular. On Dr Shaikh Mustafa Kamal's statement that Congress workers from South Kashmir voted in favour of the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mehbooba Mufti, instead of coalition candidate Dr Mehboob Beigh for the Anantnag parliamentary seat, the senior congress leader and minister in Omar Abdullah led coalition government, G A Mir's assertion was somehow the realization of the ground reality. Mir said that NC workers voted for PDP-a statement endorsed by another Mir ( Ghulam Hasan Mir) of North Kashmir who said that he failed to motivate his workers to vote for NC. Another senior Congress leader and state Health Minster, Taj Mohi-u-Din who is also facing anti-incumbency in his Uri constituency had also said that NC and Congress workers from Uri voted in favour of PDP candidate Muzzaffar Hussain Beigh instead of alliance candidate Sharif-u-Din Shariq for the Baramullah constituency on May 7. Though Taj had said that the supporters of coalition parties in the Uri segment voted in favour of the PDP candidate not because of the party, but because of the person, however, it was yet another admission that the workers of the coalition (not the voters who boycotted) voted against them. "The argument that it were actually the workers of the NC-Congress who voted against the alliance candidates hold much significance in the backdrop that majority stayed away from the poll process for varied reasons and it was actually the political workers who while risking their lives came out to vote" senior journalist Masood Husain told Early Times.. If this is the scenario then what is the actual ground situation is certainly beyond imagination of young chief minister and if he actually wants to have first hand information on that he should listen to what the people in streets were talking about during the day today-the people in Srinagar who actually did not vote.So the vertical divide in its vote bank Kashmir valley suggests that NC was actually facing a strong anti-incumbency for its non-performance, Masood said. He said that quite contrary to its expectations, the Congress too was hammered in the Jammu region with the only difference those voters not workers voted it out. "Frustration in both the camps, as a result of weak performance has reached new heights as it is quite likely that both NC and Congress may lose grip over state politics, where the leadership of both the sides has engaged itself in washing their dirty linen in public" Masood said. Another senior political observer said that the ruling alliance has tasted defeat at the hands of workers; general public is yet to express its disenchantment against it. Meanwhile Congress is now believed to be bracing for a show down with NC. The party feels that forming an alliance for parliamentary elections was not wise decision and it will be suicidal for Congress to carry it forward to assembly elections, going to be held by the end of this year. Further, Congress has reportedly accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of deliberate attempts to criticize Modi during his campaign in Jammu, as according to Congress he knew that even Congress voters have some feelings for BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate. Now when the results have come, the souring relations between NC and Congress suggest that a coalition between the two parties may not last long.
