| Let separatists change their mindset | | | Various Separatist groups have given a call to people in the Kashmir valley to observe bandh on the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kashmir on July 4.Senior separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Yasin Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Syeda Asiya Andrabi have urged people to observe complete shutdown on the visit of Modi to the State..Nothing abnormal or unprecedented about the call for hartal. These separatists have been quick in calling for shutdown whenever any top Indian leader visits the valley. They call for peoples' protest whenever any foreign dignitary is on a tour to India or is on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir. These separatists lose no time in calling upon people to observe shutdown on issues that may or may not concern the masses in the Kashmir valley. These separatists have been seen calling upon people to stay away from the poll process. They have been urging people to boycott polling, to stay away from the process of the election, whether for the Lok Sabha or for the Assembly. It is something different that their calls for poll boycott have not evoked full response. If there is some response to their call for poll boycott it has come from a section of voters in not more than 15 out of 46 Assembly segments in the Kashmir valley only. Since 1996 when the separatists have started calling upon people to stay away from the poll process the percentage of polling in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh has witnessed increase thereby indicating that separatists influence on people has remained confined to some areas of the Kashmir valley only. When there has been peoples' response to the call for poll boycott from the voters why do these separatists keep on urging people to stay away from the poll process? Why do not these separatists stop giving calls for shutdown ? The reason is simple. These separatists want to register their presence in the Kashmir valley. They wish to register their relevance in the Kashmir valley. And whenever people respond to their call for shutdown these separatists aim at conveying to New Delhi and other foreign nations that they (separatists) represent the aspirations and sentiments of people of Kashmir. By giving calls for shutdown against even some nonissues these separatists want to convey to New Delhi that they continue to be a force to reckon with. They aim to convey to New Delhi that the Kashmir issue is alive and not settled. Yes, people too enjoy responding to the separatists' call for shutdown. People get respite from the daily drill of attending their duties in the Government offices. Kids do get a chance to enjoy a game of cricket on the Mohalla streets after the educational institutions are closed as part of precautionary measures. These Hurriyat Conference leaders have earned the dubious title of Hartal Conference because of their repeated calls for shutdown. If they want people to observer hartal on July 4, when Modi will be on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir, to convey to the Prime Minister that the Kashmir issue is not settled these separatists are wrong. If they believe that frequent shutdown will force New Delhi to resolve the Kashmir issue they are fully wrong. In the context of the separatists call to people to observe shutdown a senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said the separatists' dream of taking away Jammu and Kashmir from the mainland India will never succeed and asked the separatists to change their mindset. As far as separatists are concerned, they should put an end to their mindset of creating a separate country in Jammu and Kashmir... Their dream will never be fulfilled. Naqvi said the separatist leaders should realize that the government at the Centre has changed and they need to curb their activities. Calling for an end to cross-border terrorism, he said, "On the one hand there is terrorism and on the other hand there is flower of friendship and peace -- both cannot go together." As far as the BJP leadership is concern it seems to be unmoved by the separatists call for shutdown. Even if people respond to the call for shutdown in Kashmir Modi will not be stopped from inaugurating the power project and from reviewing the security scenario with top Army authorities' .And Naqvi is right when he has suggested to the separatists to change their mindset. Let the separatists come forward and discuss various issues with the BJP led NDA Government. |
