| State Govt may seek financial help from Center | | Rise in old age, widows' pension | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 2: The state Government may seek added financial help from the BJP led NDA Government for enhancing pension to widows and destitute in Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources said that the state Government has taken a cognizance of senior CPIM leader MY Tarigami's demand for increasing pension and other financial support to over 45,000 widows and destitute in Jammu and Kashmir. The NC led coalition Government is keen to increase financial help to these widows and destitute which could help the NC and the Congress during the ensuing Assembly election. The state Government would welcome if the centre sanctioned additional financial help for enhancing pension to widows and destitute before the model code of conduct for the election was imposed. Tarigami has expressed concern over pathetic living conditions of a vast section of widows, orphans, destitute and old age people in the State, CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has urged government to enhance widow and old age pension to ensure welfare of this poor and miserable lot of the society. "Rs 400 financial assistance is too small an amount which cannot even fetch them medicines," Tarigami said, adding that the amount received by widows, old aged and orphans after running form pillar to post in social welfare department needs to be reviewed without any delay. Tarigami while referring to the huge number of orphans, widows, handicapped and destitute people observed that the State government must go for a one time exercise to cover all the needy and deserving people under the 'central gove- rnment's various flagship programs'. The CPI (M) leader also remarked that instead of spending money on unproductive areas, the government must focus and utilize that money in providing financial assistance to the uncovered segments of the society who are in distress. Tarigami plans to send a communication to the Midi led Government in which he will demand financial support to the state for raising the level of pensions and financial help to widows, orphans, destitute and old age people. |
