| DB asks AGI to depute ASG to assist court in Wullar case | | Wullar lake conservation: | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 2: Division Bench (DB) of Jammu and Kashmir has asked Attorney General of India to depute an officer not below the status of Additional Solicitor General so that results by hefty spending the amounts released by the central and state agencies be utilized in proper directions" for Wullar lake conservation. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Kashmir Environment Protection v/s State of J&K and others to seek savior of lake, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Hasnain Massodi also directed National River Conservation, Environment and Forests Government of India, to depute an expert to oversee the implementation process of Conservation. "We feel that for the last many years that the funds have been spent on various water bodies but the magnitude of results is not matching to the funds spent and much more could be easily achieved by close monitoring by the experts," the court said. The court directed Chief Executive Officer of Wullar Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) to file latest status reports with regard to the funds utilised. "The Wullar Lake is one of the largest fresh water Lake of Asia. The pristine beauty of Dal Lake has also been highlighted World over. The huge funds which are been earmarked for saving these lakes could be utilised only if some experts are provided to the local scientists," the court said. Pertinently, during the last hearing, Director Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance Government of India had stated that Rs 30 crore has been released to J&K government for conservation of Wullar Lake as directed by the High Court. "Public Money has to be utilized for the purpose for which it is meant," the court had added. |
