| Cong, NC a spent force in Kashmir | | PDP's electoral chances | | Rustam JAMMU, Sept 4: The PDP, which led in about 40 out of 46 Assembly segments in Kashmir in the Lok Sabha election, is likely to win maximum number of seats in the Valley. As for the Congress, it has little support-base. At best, it has some influence in a few pockets in 3 to 4 Assembly constituencies. It is virtually on the verge of extinction. It has no leader worth his name who could inspire confidence in the Congress' demoralized rank and file. Its leadership is divided into three groups, with their leaders pulling in different directions. But more than that, the people across the State describe Congress as the "B-team" of the Kashmiri parties, as it keeps all of them in a good humour. That the Congress has lost all of its appeal and sheen and become thoroughly unpopular could be seen from the fact neither Saif-ud-Din Soz nor Ghulam Nabi Azad even once suggested that they would contest the upcoming Assembly election. The story of NC is equally pathetic. How else should one describe the reports that the election managers of NC are frantically looking for a "safe" seat for Omar Abdullah in Kashmir. A leader who cannot muster courage to test political waters in Ganderbal constituency, hitherto considered a pocket borough of Abdullah family, just cannot avert the impending disaster. It is a well-known fact that Omar Abdullah is not a vote-catcher. The NC, like the Congress, also has no leader who could retrieve the ground it has lost to the PDP over the period. NC president Farooq Abdullah could have been an asset for the party, but Omar Abdullah has rendered him ineffective and unreal for all practical purposes. Farooq Abdullah, who is also not keeping good health, lost the election miserably to the PDP because of the unpopularity of the NC-Congress coalition government and Omar Abdullah's style of functioning. And what happened at Ganderbal the other day during the NC workers' convention and the manner in which the NC provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani kicked the anti-Omar Abdullah NC workers was nothing but an indication of the NC leadership's frustration. The point is that the actions of the NC leadership are improving the electoral chances of the PDP with each passing day. |
