Flood-hit items worth Rs 10 lakh seized in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 16 : In its continued drive against selling of flood affected food items, the Drugs and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) has seized different items, including cold drinks worth Rs 10 lakhs in this summer capital, the most affected district in September floods. Officials said here today that a team of food safety officers of DFCO headed by Assistant Commissioner Food Safety district Srinagar, on a specific information regarding storage of flood-hit items, inspected godowns for the past two days at Bemina and Batmaloo areas of the city. They said huge quantity of flood-hit food items which included products of Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Private Limited and ITC companies of Rs 10 lakh were found in these godowns. The proprietors of these godowns were hoarding these flood-hit items for sending it back to the concerned manufacturing companies, they said adding that there was every apprehension that the same consignment could have been reused and recycled. They said these items were kept in safe custody of the Food Business Operators and surety bond was executed from them, to ensure that these items are properly destroyed. They said a team of Drugs and Food Control Organization (DFCO) headed by Assistant Commissioner Food Safety Srinagar inspected Industrial Estate Baghi Ali Mardan Khan during the past two days. During inspection one spice manufacturing unit -- M/S Idrees Enterprises was found adding synthetic colour (Sudan Dye) in red chilli powder, which is prohibited under Food Safety and Standards Act. As many as 734 kgs of Chilli powder had been seized and samples of it sent for analysis. They said another unit holder of spices -- Shaheen Spices was found adding turmeric powder to Sounf powder. 500 kgs of such Sounf powder was seized and samples sent for analysis. In addition, a huge quantity of food affected food items worth Rs 3.75 lakh were destroyed on spot in various areas of the Srinagar city, officials said. They said another team of DFCO inspected the premises of M/S Northern Food Industry at Rathpora Noor Bagh and found it in total insanitary conditions. A huge quantity of labels of fake addresses of New Delhi and Gaziabad were also found on the factory premises. They said 200 Kg infant food products worth Rs 35,000 which were being manufactured under such insanitary conditions and such fake labels were seized. Samples of such food items were lifted for analysis. The seized food articles and fake labels were kept in the safe custody. Moreover, the manufacture of such food items has been prohibited from further manufacturing. In the meantime the concerned SHO has been asked to ensure implementation of such prohibition order. |
