NC ‘misrule’ ends on gloomy note
PDP emerging as alternative for people, party rebels

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 16: The “misrule” of National Conference during the past six years has not only pushed people away from it but has also made its own people leave the party.
The common complaint of the people and the NC leaders has been that Omar Abdullah during the past six years acted like a “monarch” and was least concerned about the sufferings of the people.
Even the NC leaders who are leaving the party one after another seem to be fed up with what they have termed as the “dictatorial approach” of the NC leadership.
The NC top brass turned a blind eye towards the growing resentment in the party and its legislators and ministers remained busy in “enjoying privileges.”
Analysts believe that Omar Abdullah turned out to be “weak leader” and failed to keep his flock together. “The alleged custodial killing of Haji Mohammad Yusuf proved to be a turning point in the history of the National Conference. He was summoned by the Chief Minister to his residence and was later handed over to the Crime Branch. His death created ripples in the NC camp,” said an analyst.
He said, “Omar added insult to the injuries of the family of the deceased by calling Haji Yusuf a crook.”
The NC insiders claim that late Haji Yusuf was very close to Abdullah family and had not expected that he would be treated so shabbily. “After his death many NC activists realized that all their hard work has gone in a vain and party leadership believes in use and throw policy,” the analyst added.
Soon after Haji Yusuf’s death NC activists started changing their loyalties to safeguard their political careers. The results of NC having lost its base in the Valley were evident in the Parliamentary elections held in May this year as all the three NC candidates, including their patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, faced humiliating defeat. The ruling party failed to open its account in Kashmir region.
The rebellion started from Ganderbal, which remained NC’s bastion for more than four decades. Sheikh Ghulam Ahmed Saloora, the close aide of Dr Farooq Abdullah, was the first one to tender his resignation from the party. Saloora alleged that he was ignored by the party leadership and juniors are calling the shots. Many NC workers and leaders followed the footsteps of Saloora and slowly left the party.
In the past former NC parliamentarian from north Kashmir Abdul Rasheed Shaheen, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Ajat Shatru Singh and now Dr Mehboob Beg have left NC and have extended support to the Peoples Democratic Party, which has emerged as a strong alternative for the people and the disgruntled NC leaders.
Soon after Shaheen left the party NC called him “opportunistic’ and made no attempt to reach out to him, similarly when Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and Ajat Shatru Singh said goodbye to the party Omar took to the twitter and called them “deadwood.”
Today when Dr Mehboob Beg called it quits, NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani called a press conference and called Dr Beg a “chameleon.”
A political commentator while talking to Early Times said, “If NC leadership fails to introspect and change its attitude towards the people and its leaders it would disappear from the political arena of Jammu and Kashmir. They cannot keep on blaming their leaders and activists, who have served the party for so long, forever.”
