Jammu, Dec 31 : 153 lives were lost on roads in 1324 mishaps during the year 2014 as Traffic police generated Rs 3.33 crore as fine from people for violating traffic rules in the winter capital. As per the data available with the Early Times, till November 2014, Traffic Police generated whooping Rs 3,33,54,422 by challaning traffic violators. ''We have generated a revenue of Rs 3.33 crore so far by challaning various offenders this year as,'' said SSP Traffic Jammu Mohan Lal. Most of the revenue has been realized through compound fine , followed by the Court fine. As per data, Rs 2,81,39,952 has been realized through compound fine and Rs 52,14,470 has been realized through court fine.The common violations for which the penalty was imposed include drunken driving, wrong parking, using mobile while driving, driving two wheelers without crash helmet, driving car without seat belt, over loading, plying vehicles without registration number besides other violations.SSP Traffic Mohan Lal enumerated various reasons behind the accidents including rash driving, driving without wearing crash helmet, lack of awareness on the part of drivers ( both commercial and private), over speeding, over loading, poor road condition etc. Pertinently, in last three years, 2708 persons lost their lives in 16572 road accidents while 23,245 people received injuries across Jammu and Kashmir. In the year 2012, 6709 accidents took place while as 1165 persons were killed and 9755 were injured. In the year 2013, 6469 road accidents took place and 990 persons were killed while as 8681 persons were injured. Upto July, 2014, the figures stated that 3394 road accidents were reported and 553 persons were killed while as 4809 persons were injured. Further increasing number of accidents also raised a question mark on the working of the concerned departments which include PWD, Transport, Traffic Police and JMC. |
