Caught in Catch 22 situation, BJP finds it difficult to get numbers to form govt | Alliance with PDP only viable option available | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Caught in a 'Catch 22' situation Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is finding it difficult to get the numbers in order to stake their claim with respect to the government formation in Jammu & Kashmir. The party seems to have stuck on 25 with no forward movement. BJP which has emerged as the second largest party with 25 seats in the assembly after People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has not been able to motivate any legislator to join them so that the party could form the next government in the state. Despite claiming that they enjoy support of many independents nothing concrete has come out so far. It is indeed a herculean task for the BJP leaders to reach 44 so that they could stake claim for the government formation in the state. Since the Mission 44+ of the party failed in the state it remains to be seen how the party can get the required numbers to form the government. Political observers and analysts believe that majority of the independents and other candidates elected in the recent assembly elections are unwilling to support BJP in its bid to form the next government in the state. Legislators like Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, Hakeem Mohammad Yasin, Syed Baqar Razvi and Engineer Abdul Rashid would not like to be part of government headed by BJP. On the other side legislators like Sajad Gani Lone and Bashir Ahmad Dar of Peoples Conference and Pawan Gupta (independent) are likely to support BJP, but their support is not enough to form the government. One is forced to laugh at the claims of BJP leaders that they would get the required numbers to form the government. Since BJP cannot align with Congress it has to look for support from either PDP or National Conference in order to form the next government in state. In a change of heart of late, the NC has decided not to be part of the government led by BJP. Instead they are comfortable with PDP with regard to government formation in Jammu & Kashmir. In such a scenario the only option available to BJP is to truck with PDP for forming the next government in the state. Indications are that the party has already decided to play second fiddle to PDP in the new dispensation in the state. The demand for a chief minister from Jammu has turned weak over the past few days and the party leaders seem to be involved in lip service rather than seriousness in this regard. The BJP knows it fully well that this is the best chance to form government in the state and they may not get the chance in future. If the party fails to form the government or be a part of the government then people of Jammu would feel disappointed with serious repercussions in store for BJP. As such one is constrained to think that BJP is ready to accept demands of PDP with regard to government formation in state. |
