SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Police used force and arrested some employees of Urban Local Bodies department while foiling their march being carried out by them in support of their demands here in the afternoon. The employees have threatened agitation in case their demands are not met immediately.
This afternoon scores of employees of Urban Local Bodies under the banner of Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) assembled here at the Press Enclave and raised slogans in support of their demands. The employees alleged apathy from the government with respect to their 'genuine' demands.
As part of their programme the employees started their march towards the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir in order to present their memorandum containing their demands. As soon as the employees started their march the police personnel present there stopped and did not allow them to move ahead.
The protesting employees led by ULBEUF President, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori raised slogans against the alleged harassment from the police and tried their best to break the cordon. However, they could not break the cordon and were bundled by cops in the vehicle that was already placed there. The employees were taken to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station only to be released later on.
The employees were protesting in favour of the daily wagers and consolidated workers who are yet to be regularized despite putting in seven years of service. They wanted quick and speedy disposal of time bound cases which according to them are pending in the Directorate office for a long time now.
The protesters were demanding that an 'effective' time bound transfer policy is put in place in the department and that the work culture should be improved. They demanded that honest officers and employees should be encouraged to deliver best while as the incompetent and dishonest should be taken to task.
The protesters demanded that civil service rules should be applied to the department and the reorganization process should also be speeded up. They also demanded release of arrears of sixth pay commission and conduct of departmental promotion committee meetings at divisional as well as state level.
The employees demanded that orders issued in violation of Model Code of Conduct should be rolled back with the tainted officers not to be reinstated. They demanded that political interference in the working of Municipal Committees and Councils across the state should be stopped so that there are better results.
