Desperate Azad wooing NC for support | Rajya Sabha Elections | | Rustam Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 23: Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who before, during and after the election campaign umpteen times lambasted the then J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who is also the working president of the NC, and held him responsible for the defeat of the Congress party, is moving heaven and earth to woo the same NC leadership in his desperate bid to garner its support so that he could re-enter the Rajya Sabha and remain relevant in political arena. Azad had on occasions more then one questioned the leadership and working style of Omar Abdullah and had bemoaned the high command's decision to allow Omar Abdullah, who, according to him, had failed as an administrator, to lead the government for an entire period of six years. He had also repeatedly said that had Omar Abdullah been replaced by the Congress after he completed three years in office, the fate of the story of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections would have been altogether different. In effect, he had directly questioned the party high command's decision not to adopt the 2002 power-sharing formula according to which the PDP led the state government for first three years and the Congress during the next three years. Azad before, during and after the election campaign had denounced and criticized Omar Abdullah to the extent that the later had to react and react very violently. He paid back in the same coin and used very strong words against the Congress leader, who had suffered a massive defeat in the Lok Sabha election at the hands of the BJP candidate Jitendra Singh and had conducted himself in a fashion that led to the Congress' defeat in the Assembly elections. His conduct was so irresponsible and provocative that even the electorate of the erstwhile Doda district voted overwhelmingly for the BJP candidates in four out of six Assembly constituencies. Azad and his cronies are reportedly in touch with the NC top brass. They are urging the NC leadership to support the candidature of Azad. The Congress has 12 MLAs. Azad can win in case all the 15 NC MLAs and independent MLAs vote for him in the Rajya Sabha election. Insiders claim that the "NC is in no mood to oblige Azad, as he had ridiculed the NC working president and worked against the interests of the NC". "The NC cannot support the Congress candidate at its own cost," insiders further said. Sources within the party also disclosed that "Omar wants his Dad (Farooq Abdullah) to enter the Rajya Sabha". To make their point, the sources referred to what Omar Abdullah tweeted two days ago. Omar Abdullah had favoured the candidature of Farooq Abdullah, who is in London these days. If one goes by the general mood in the NC, then it can be said that the chances of the NC supporting Azad are too remote. Azad, it appears, is destined to lose his political status in the second week of February. Believe it or not, but it is also fact that a vast majority of Congress men in J&K is also opposed to Azad, as it believes that he was responsible for the destruction of the Congress party in the state. |
