As Assembly session nears end, BJP MLAs play to gallery over AFSPA | | | ET Report JAMMU, Apr 7: As the Assembly session reaches its fag end, BJP the alliance partner in ruling coalition led by PDP today got an opportunity to take a 'somersault' to what it has agreed in principal on the controversial AFSPA in written document of Common Minimum Programme. In what was more seen as playing to gallery and to register the 'protest' in media files, it was a show the MLAs of the ruling party staged today vehemently , albeit in deviation from what the party has consented in the CMP. Apparently in response to the killings of cops in Shopian on Monday, the MLAs of BJP had come with some rehearsals and along with some props , mainly placards to 'clarify' what party stands for over this issue and what should be deciphered by media in context of its stand. However, as expected the protesting lot drew flak from the opposition NC and Congress who questioned as to what the party actually stands for and what was its real position with regard to AFSPA. The sarcastic comments and remarks were loud also in the wake of the fact that BJP has been changing , rather diluting its stand on AFSPA after it forged alliance with PDP and almost in sync with PDP chorus. While in opposition BJP used to be loud and vocal against ruling NC, particularly the then CM Omar Abdullah that the party was raking it up frequently to divert its attention from failures, the stand would be firm - opposing its revocation at all costs as and when the issue ripened in that direction. On the contrary, when the party joined PDP on ruling platform, its leadership deviated if not completely taking a u turn, over the highly contentious issue which is implicit to what it has approved in CMP. "……While both the parties have historically held a different view on AFSPA and the need for it in the state at present , as a part of agenda for governance of this alliance, the coalition government will examine the need for denotifying disturbed areas ……", these are the lines written clearly in the CMP document in which each word so mentioned is shared and expressed by the BJP too as the alliance partner. In the backdrop of this expression , what BJP MLAs did today was seen more as a political gimmick, as alleged in opposition corridors as 'drama'. However, there is a purpose and gain in staging the protest against removal or revocation of APSFA, a BIG NO what placards suggested. Party insiders have it say that the leadership as also the MLAs who people have elected on the condition of respecting certain commitments fear that complete silence coupled with what the party has agreed to in the CMP may backlash once the session is over. In other words the report card of BJP and its MLAs is not good with people is what party MLAs have realized which is what prompted them to stage protest in the Assembly today. |
