Record apple production gets lowest ever prices | | | Javaid Naikoo

Srinagar, Nov 21: The Kashmiri apples received the lowest ever prices notwithstanding the record production this year. According to reports, this year witnessed record production (80%) of A-grad apple. However orchardists say that they received lowest ever prices. Fruit Growers of south Kashmir's Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and NorthKashmir's Baramulla district informed Early Times that a A-grade Apple box is sold for Rs 500 in all local fruit mandies of Kashmir which is lowest ever price. They said that in national Fruit Mandies of country like Azadpore of Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Amritsar, same A-Grade apple box is sold to Rupees 700 but it consumes extra around rupees 100 as truck fare and another 60 rupees as Commission of agents in all such fruit Mandies. According to details the total apple production of Kashmir this year was around 20,000 metric tonnesof which around 14,000metric tonnes are sold in fruit Mandies outside Kashmir directly andindirectly by orchardists. President fruit Growers association Kashmir, Muhammad Yousuf Dar blamed he official strategy for the decline."First of all there is no marketing policy with the state government forapple production. They do not know how to expand the market for qualityapple production. They have no idea of providing storage facilities to orchardists. We don't know whom to approach as nobody listenshere," Dar told Early Times. Meanwhile despite repeated attempts no contact could be made withMinister for Horticulture Abdul RehmanVeeri to reach for hiscomments. |
