Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Mar 15: : Time and again the residents of Karnah thesil took to streets and held massive protests to urge the government to construct a yunnel at Sadhna top in this border district of north Kashmir as they remain cut off from rest of the country due to bad weather in winter.
Locals told Early Times that a call was given by Karnah Tunnel Coordination Committee (KTCC), in which the protesters requested the government to construct a tunnel at Sadhna top so that many rural areas could get connected with rest of the country.
Aijaz Ahmad said that there is a biased approach of the government as they had appealed many times in past to construct a tunnel at the highest altitude of Sadhana top so that the far flung area can remain connected with the rest of the valley round the year.
There are more than two lakh souls of Tangdar, Teetwal and Karanah that remains cut off from rest of the Valley from December to May every year.
Almost there is a distance of 80-90 kilometers from Kupwara-Tandhar and road gets blocked due to accumulation of 15-20 feet of snow at Sadhana top, which is more than 11500 feet above the sea level, said Aijaz.
A group of locals alleged that in the recent past we had appealed to the government for construction of Tunnel so that accidents could not occur, but their non serious approach towards this hilly areas have put the lives of common man at risk, even though during accidents we can't shift the serious patients for specialized treatment to hospitals in Srinagar or other places.
Locals said that, a tunnel from TCP Chowkibal to Zarla curve will negotiate the height of Sadhana pass and will prevent the loss of lives from snow avalanches, as they are the worst hit of snowfall during winters.
Irony is that government is spending crores on the construction of roads, building, and other works but they never gave their attention towards the development of the hilly areas, said Karnah Tunnel Coordination Committee (KTCC).
According to them with the construction of this tunnel people of this border area will get relief and can be easily connected with rest of the valley during winters.
It is pertinent to mention here that, on January 6, eleven bodies were recovered in two different avalanches that struck the area, and people had blamed the government that they were appealed for the construction of tunnel at Sadhna top, which is long pending demand of the rural masses before the government.
