Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 15: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences (SKUAST) has released a full page advertisement for `doubling' farmers' income. The advertisement carries some photos depicting inspection of the Vice Chancellor and Scientists' achievements.
The farmers, for the information of the SKUAST, have been mislead on various issues and that too by the SKUAST. For example, a new variety of apple is being introduced in Kashmir at the behest of the so-called experts. The government gives some incentives as well to encourage the growers to go for the variety. The variety may fetch the farmers some quick bucks but will slowly but surely make the local variety extinct. The Jammu Kashmir had a flourishing silk business during Dogra regime. The factory survived only a few decades of the so-called democratic rule and today the factory houses some other departments of the government. The factory is gone down in ruins.
The SKUAST could have done a commendable job in reviving the silkworm rearing and subsequently manufacture of silk on a large scale. But not much has been done in this regard notwithstanding a massive mulberry nursery spread over thousands of kannals of land near Narbal in Kashmir where the authorities do some sort of research.
The condition of the farmers in Jammu region is equally bad. The SKUAST has to take tangible measures other than releasing lavish advertisements to local newspapers.
