BJP leader attacked by terrorists in Srinagar escapes unhurt
3/15/2018 10:30:03 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 15: Jammu and Kashmir BJP leader Anwar Khan was attacked by unidentified militants on the outskirts of Srinagar. While Khan escaped unhurt, one of his security officers has sustained injuries. A joint team including Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police have launched an operation to capture the terrorists.
According to sources, two terrorists approached Khan when he was travelling in Balhama in Pulwama district. One of the terrorists attacked the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of the leader and attempted to seize his weapon. The security officer however retaliated and injured. "Militants fired upon Anwar Khan, a BJP leader, at Balhama in Pulwama district. While Khan escaped the attack unhurt, his PSO, constable Bilal Ahmad, was injured in the incident. The injured policeman was rushed to a hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable," a police officer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Meanwhile, the police have cordoned off the area and a special operations group consisting of the Army, CRPF and police personnel has undertaken a massive search operation. This is not the first time terrorists have targetted political leadership in the state.
Most recently, terrorists have attacked Panchayat leaders in Jammu and Kashmir- as a result of which the Mufti government, in January notified that the local body elections- slated to take place in March- would be postponed. While the forces have been carrying out area domination exercise, the shoot, and scoot attack is likely to have taken place during the small window when the security forces teams were absent in the area.
