Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 18: Sher e Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology Jammu (SKUAST-J) today launched greening villages with Neem campaign under Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Govt. of India sponsored project on popularization of biopesticides. One of neem's main active ingredients, aza-dirachtin, acts as a natural growth regulator and feeding deterrent to over 500 species of insects. About fifty five farmers were distributed neem saplings and introduced to benefit of planting of neem and its use in agriculture at Raipur, Samba. The farmers were demonstrated on preparation of neem bio pesticides on their own level like Neem kernel extract, Neem oil spray and neem cake by Dr R K Gupta. Making home based biopesticides by themselves doesn't require much investment and technology and empower them for producing and selling quality and nearly organic produce. However, farmers were cautioned to prepare neem seed kernel extract a fresh every time they want to use it. On field practical skills were also imparted to farmers by Dr Suhail on how to make plant origin pesticides from local plants Pongamia and Garlic. The use of egg parasoitoid Trichogra-mma for managing tomato fruit borer was also demonstrated in field. Pamphlets on "Making your own biopesticides" from local plants were also distributed to farmers. Progressive farmers of the area shared their experience on traditional pesticides and practices of pest management and appealed the fellow farmers to use bio pesticides and bio-agents for pesticide free crop production in the area and emphasized the need for such demonstration programmes for the benefit of the farming community. The farmers were also provided minikits for testing the outcome of the use of bio pesticides.
