School Education Department caught in Catch 22 situation | Orders for holding extra classes instead of keeping schools open on Sunday | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 16: Finding itself caught in Catch 22 situation the Department of School Education today ordered the heads of government schools in Kashmir valley to arrange extra classes for the students so that the time lost due to law & order situation this year in the valley is compensated. Sources told Early Times that the order has been issued following the department's decision not to keep the schools open on Sundays. They said that the people at helm believe that if schools are kept open on Sundays it would send a wrong signal to the people especially those in power. "The managements of private schools compensate for the days lost due to strikes and restrictions by holding classes and internal examination on Sundays. However, the higher ups of school education department are not ready to do this even thought the same is for the benefit of students," said sources. Sources said that there is a thought among the people at helm in the government that if schools are kept open on Sundays it would mean that they are following the programme of the separatist organizations. They said that the same would lead to a situation by which the separatists would have an upper hand. "The school education department has been in news for wrong reasons and keeping the school open on Sunday would add yet another dimension to the whole issue. Keeping the school open on Sunday seems to be a simple decision but it is not so in a sensitive state like Jammu & Kashmir since political connotation is attached to the same," said sources. Sources said that higher ups of school education department opine that if they keep the schools open on Sunday then they would come in for sharp criticism from the politicians irrespective of their affiliation. It is due to this reason that the school education department has decided to hold extra classes instead of keeping the schools open on Sunday. "Holding of extra classes is a million dollar question and it remains to be seen how far the department would be able to deliver in this regard. Mere issuance of order is not enough and it has to be implemented in letter and spirit on ground. The order can be of use only when the adequate measures are taken and the situation is normal," said sources. An official spokesman said that Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) Ghulam Nabi Itoo has directed all the heads of the institutions to arrange extra classes for the students and ensure the timely completion of syllabus. Itoo directed all the headmasters and head teachers to compulsorily take classes alongside other teaching faculties of their respective institutions. "The instructions were issued by the Director at a special meet of Joint Directors, Chief Education Officers and DIET Principals held here today. He directed all the Chief Education Officers and Zonal Education Officers to personally participate in the monitoring mechanism and ensure the implementation of these instructions on ground level," said the official spokesman. |
