| NMC demands gazetted holiday on Workers' day | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 25: National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) today urged the Prime Minister to declare the International Workers Day as a gazetted holiday across the country as a befitting tribute to the May Day martyrs. "We urge the prime minister to declare May Day as a gazetted holiday throughout the country under the Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to the May Day martyrs and recognizing the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country," NMC President Subash Shastri said in a memorandum sent to the prime minister today. He said because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights across the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy and the frontline welfare state should also declare May 1 as gazetted holiday. Setting up of National wage commission besides enhancing the wages of the daily rated workers to rupee five hundred per day etc were demands were highlighted in the memorandum.
Emphasizing on the need for total exemption of Dearness Allowance (DA) from the ambit of Income Tax, Shastri also urged Prime Minister to reconsider the practice and take early decision in this regard, so that confusion and uncertainty among employees and pensioners of the Central and State Governments will come to end. |
