I&FC yet to take decision on pending Jehlum works
5/3/2018 10:33:10 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 3: After failing e to complete dredging work on Jhelum in time by the Kolkatta based firm, the government is yet to take a decision for the completion of pending work.
After September 2014 floods, the Rs 280 crore project for phase I was awarded to Kolkata based company to clear excessive siltation that had accumulated and drastically reduced the carrying-capacity of river Jhelum.
After missing several deadlines, the deadline for phase I was extended to March 31, 2018.
However, the company has failed to meet the final deadline as well.
An official of Irrigation and Flood Control Department, said, "We have achieved a target of 6.50 lakh cubic meter against the target of 7 lakh cubic meter in Srinagar."
He acknowledged the firm's failure in completing the project in stipulated period of time.
"Yes, the firm has been unable to meet the last deadline. For pending work, either fresh tenders will be issued or the firm will be asked to it," he said.
Asked if the same firm will be hired for phase II, the official said that they are yet to decide on the matter.
"The period of tendering and agreement with the firm has expired on March 31. So far no decision has been taken about the phase II," he said.
Commenting on the submission of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for phase 2, he said that it will take two months to frame the report.
"The process of drafting a DPR is in the pipeline. The Consultant for preparation of DPR has been fixed by the government and it will be ready in two months," he said.
The drudging of the river Jhelum was to be carried in two phases and phase-I of the project was initiated in North and central Kashmir. For Bell Mouth to Panjinara stretch in Srinagar, the deadline for completing the first phase of dredging was January 2017 but the government extended the deadline to December 2017 due to 2016 unrest. And for Sopore to Baramulla stretch, the deadline for completing the first phase of dredging was September 2017. As the company failed to meet the target the March 31st was kept as the final deadline for the project and the company failed to meet that as well.
