Crime Branch suffers two setbacks in 10 days
Kathua case

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 18: The Jammu & Kashmir Crime Branch, which is handling the alleged Kathua rape and murder case, has suffered two major setbacks in a short span of ten days, thus vindicating those who had been seeking a CBI probe into the case.
The Crime Branch suffered the first major setback on May 7. That day, the Supreme Court of India turned down its suggestion that the Kathua case must not be transferred out of Jammu & Kashmir. The Crime Branch reportedly wanted the case to be transferred from Kathua to Ramban. The Apex court didn't consider the suggestion of the Crime Branch and, instead, transferred the case to Pathankot.
The Apex court not only transferred the case to Pathankot but also ordered a day-to-day trial, thus puncturing the balloon of those who reportedly wanted to drag the case for years as the number of witnesses in the case was over 220. The ruling of the Supreme Court that the case be tried on a daily-basis was a significant development.
The struggling people of Hiranagar celebrated the Supreme Court's ruling as their "first major victory".
The Crime Branch suffered the second major setback on May 17. The Supreme Court allowed three witnesses in the Kathua case Sahil Sharma, Sachin Sharma and Neeraj Sharma to be accompanied by their relatives if they are called for further investigation by the Crime Branch. These witnesses had in their petition urged the Supreme Court to provide them protection. "We hope and trust the state (Jammu & Kashmir) shall carry investigation in a fair manner," the Supreme Court also said.
What the Apex court said constituted yet another setback for the Crime Branch in the sense that the counsels of the Jammu & Kashmir Government Senior advocate PS Patwalia and lawyer Shoeb Alam wanted the Apex court to reject the petition of the three accused but Supreme Court didn't consider their arguments.
