Early Times Report
Jammu, June 18: Even as the Cordon And Search Operations resumed Monday after a month-long ceasefire in restive Kashmir, the union government is skeptical about the achievements of the peace initiative, which witnessed more militancy related incidents than the previous months.
Official sources said a record number of 20 grenade attacks, 50 militant strikes took place in Jammu and Kashmir, during the ceasefire, while the security forces exercised maximum restraint.
Interestingly, in the month preceding ceasefire, the total of terror related incidents was even half than what happened between May 17 and June 17. According to officials, between April 17 to May 17, there were only 18 incidents of terror.
As per official sources, there was 80 percent rise in grenade attacks in Kashmir during the ceasefire.
Nine security men, including four army jawans, were killed during the period.
And around two dozen youth joined militant ranks during first three weeks of Ramzan alone while fresh figures are being reckoned.
Sources said the statistics of the militant attack and comparative rise in such incidents prompted the union government to end the ceasefire.
Sources said while some of the ministers in the central government were still willing to extend the peace initiative, majority of others in the BJP government were against the plans.
Sources said even though the Jammu and Kashmir Police had given a powerpoint presentation to the home ministry Rajnath Singh during his recent Kashmir visit, highlighting benefits of the ceasefire, the figures of militancy related incidents proved a spoilsport.
Sources said the central government felt that ceasefire was giving more opportunity to the militants than the peaceniks.
On June 17, the Home Ministry said the operations against the militants will resume. "The Government of India decides not to extend the suspension of operations in Jammu and Kashmir announced in the beginning of Ramzan," a ministry statement said.
It said the "security forces are being directed to take all necessary actions as earlier to prevent the militants from launching attacks and indulging in violence and killings".
Home Minister Rajnath Singh in a series of tweets said that the decision to not conduct counter insurgency operations in the state had been taken "in the interests of the peace-loving people of Jammu and Kashmir, in order to provide them a conducive atmosphere to observe Ramzan".
The union government said though the security forces had "displayed exemplary restraint" during the suspension of anti-terror operations that has been "widely appreciated all over the country including Jammu and Kashmir in bringing relief to the common citizens, the terrorists have continued with their attacks on civilians and (security forces), resulting in deaths and injuries".
