| HC grants CBI 3 weeks for fresh status report | | |

Srinagar, July 2: The state High Court today granted Central Bureau of India to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for filling latest status report into investigation into unraveling theft of a copy of the Holy Quran bearing the seal of a Mughal Emperor from Shri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum here in 2003.
A division bench of court granted the time after counsel for the premier investigation agency, Tahir Majid Shamsi sought three weeks time. The court asked him to inform that whether CBI has laid hand on the culprits.
So far investigating agency has not been able to make substantial progress in reaching to any positive conclusion regarding the theft of 400-year-old manuscript of Holy Quran.
The rare copy of the Quran was stolen from Srinagar's Sri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum in broad daylight, in September 2003. More than fifteen years have passed but so far it remains missing.
The court was hearing a PIL filed in 2008 by a Srinagar based social organisation, Valley Citizen's Council, seeking directions for the protection and conservation of artefacts, monuments and excavation sites in Kashmir besides directions to find the manuscript of the Quran and other prized articles. The PIL states the archaeological excavations and artefacts of Kashmiri's rich heritage have been neglected and alleged that a number of rare manuscripts and coins went missing from the SPS museum. |
