Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 6: Despite the Government Order imposing a blanket ban on private practice of doctors holding top notch position in the government sector head of a district hospital in South Kashmir is carrying out private practice in at least two health institutions in his home district.
Although complaints have been lodged against this particular medico in the past as well, but no action whatsoever has been taken against him so far. The basic reason for the same is that he is close to Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and enjoyed very close rapport with the echelons of power in the previous dispensation.
One of the close relatives of this doctor continues to enjoy a top position despite the fall of PDP-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in Jammu & Kashmir. He has been heading a district hospital in South Kashmir for some time now and in the past he has been in news for wrong reasons.
Early Times is in possession of at least three discharge certificates issued by a private hospital and a nursing home on which the name of Medical Superintendent is written. The doctor in question is an anesthesiologist and on the discharge certificates it has been written that he administered anesthesia to the three patients admitted at the private hospital and nursing home.
While two patients received treatment at the nursing home the third one was treated at the private hospital. The nursing home and the private hospital are located in the home district of medico and he enjoys cozy relationship with the people manning the nursing home and the private hospital. The Department of Health has made it clear that private practice by heads of health institutions including Drawing and Disbursing Officers like Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), Medical Superintendents (MSs) and Block Medical Officers (BMOs) is banned in Jammu & Kashmir.
"Not long ago a CMO and that too in South Kashmir was suspended after it was found that he was indulging in private practice. The punitive action against the CMO was taken after a squad of Directorate of Health Services Kashmir raided the private hospital where the medico was found carrying out the private practice. However, no action has been taken against his counterpart in a different district in South Kashmir," said sources.
The issue of private doctors by the medicos who are not supposed to carry out the same has been hogging the headlines in media outlets in the state for a long time now. However, in most of the cases the doctors run away and where the action is taken it is not up to the desired level that would give a feeling that justice has been done.
"Since Govenor N N Vohra is very keen to improve the work culture in the government hospitals it is high time that action is taken against the doctors who bring a bad name to the noble profession of the world. If action is taken against one of the doctors it would act as deterrent for the others," said sources.
