Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Elections for Jammu & Kashmir legislative assembly slated to be held in October 2020 are more than likely to spring a few surprises at least in the summer capital of the state since Congress party is trying its best to make inroads in some of the constituencies in the Srinagar district. Sources told Early Times that the inclusion of Tariq Hameed Karra in Congress is all set to disturb the equation of National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at least in Srinagar. The dent may be more visible in PDP since Karra left the party and resigned as Member of Parliament from Lok Sabha in 2016. "Since Karra holds sway in some of the assembly constituencies in Srinagar it remains to be seen how would NC and PDP cope up the pressure? Fate of candidates fighting elections in Batmaloo, Amira Kadal and Hazratbal would largely depend upon the response the people would give to Karra and the other candidates of Congress," said sources. Sources said that last time around the charisma of Karra played an important part in sealing the fate of candidates of PDP from Batmaloo and Hazrabal constituencies. PDP legislators like Noor Mohammad Sheikh and Asiya Naqash were able to win from these constituencies only due to the influence wielded by Karra in Batmaloo and Hazratbal constituencies.
"In the past elections for eight seats in Srinagar used to have two cornered contest, but the things may change in the next assembly election. While in the distant past NC candidates would fight it out with the Congress in the recent past a sought of direct fight was seen between candidates of NC and PDP," said sources.
Sources said that in the next assembly elections strong triangular contest cannot be ruled out on some constituencies of Srinagar. They said that Karra factor may help the Congress party to win some seats from the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and restore party's position in the Srinagar district.
"The incumbent legislators of PDP from Hazratbal and Batmaloo owe their success to Karra. It is likely that the former MP would fight the election from Batmaloo and it would be a herculean task for the sitting legislator to stick to his seat. The anti-incumbency factor cannot be ruled out in Hazratbal as well and it would be difficult for Asiya, sister in law of Karra to cling to her chair in the next assembly," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that inclusion of Karra in Congress has not gone well with some of the party leaders. The disenchantment among these Congress leaders has also increased ever since Karra has been made member of Congress Working Committee.
