China to secure greater concessions from Pakistan to increase defence aid

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 4 : Is it a new gift for Imran Khan who is schedule to take over Prime Ministership of Pakistan? Or is it pressure tactics so that Imran.after taking over as Pak Prime Minister, adopts pro-US line ? Whatever it is Pakistan which has paid a heavy price for creating a safe haven for terrorists.
Repeated warnings from the US remained unimplemented because the successive Government s in Islamabad took no step to tackle militancy. And this is the prices for exporting terror to India, including jammu and Kashmir.
And Pakistan has to bank on the Chinese support for providing military equipment to Pakistan because under the new decision the US has reduced its security related aid to a historic low.
The US has decided to grant security aid to Pakistan worth 15 million dollars against one billion dollars a year.
Amid growing tensions in bilateral ties, the US Congress has passed a defence spending Bill capping its security-related aid to Pakistan at $150 million, significantly below the historic level of more than $1 billion per year.
The National Defense Authorisation Act-2019 (NDAA-19), however, removes certain conditions-like action against Haqqani Network or the Lashkar-e-Toiba-as was the case in the past few y

ars for disbursement of US aid to Pakistan.
The Senate passed the conference report on NDAA-19 by 87 to 10 votes the other day..
The House of Representatives had passed the conference report last week. It now heads to the White House for President Donald Trump's assent.
"The legislation reduces the total amount of funds provided for reimbursement to Pakistan to $150 million.
This is a significant reduction from the $700 million that was authorised through Coalition Support Fund last year," said Anish Goel, who was part of Barack Obama's White House National Security Council.
During the previous Obama administration, Pakistan used to get nearly 1.2 billion aid from the US under the Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009 also known as the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act.
It has added new responsibility on the wide shoulders of Imran Khan who is supposed to visit Washington to remove some misgivings.Well till then it has to bank on the Chinese support and China may secure greater concessions from Pakistan in lieu increased military aid.
When the decision is submitted to the US President Donald Trump for approval it is to be seen whether he allows Pakistan to fall in the lap of China or make some amendments in the decision to woo Pakistan.
