Imams affiliated with separatists promote hatred, violence, Govt goes tough
9/15/2018 10:58:56 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 15: Several Imams, who are having affiliations with separatists, are under the scanner as they have been promoting violence through their sermons.
Sources within the police department said that various Imams have been giving sermons, which are anti-nationals.
"There are several Imams who have been spreadong hatred. Either they give anti-national speeches or giving sermons by criticising other sects," a police official said.
The official said that police departments have been giving instructions to take action against such people who preach hatred.
On Friday, the official said district development commissioner Srinagar Abid Shah instructed the police department to take action again an Imam who spread hatred. "DC Sahab told us action shall be taken against such people who spread hatred and promote violence," the official said.
The official said that these few Imams are having affiliations with separatists and are being paid to spread hatred.
Those who found involved so far are being "organisers and provocators" for their alleged role violence.
They were giving summons on Friday prayers in various mosques in Kashmir.
During 2016 unrest, some of the religious clerics were found involved in inciting violence.
The Public Health Engineering and Power Development Department is realising the tariff from the consumers for which these Imams are helping them.
An official of the PHE said the government's tactic of involving religious heads was being inspired from Bangladesh government, where religious clerics were used to aware people about importance of paying taxes.
"We have used various awareness programs across the summer capital to aware people about the benefits of paying taxes on time, but the mass mobilization tactic of involving religious clerics paid dividends," he said.
"An Imam or any other religious leader is a respectable figure in his particular area and his directions matter in every society. These religious leaders urge people to pay water tariff while delivering sermons on Fridays helps a lot."
Similarly, the PDD is too involving Imams (clerics) to invoke religious sentiments for collection of water tariffs and has yielded results.
The PDD officials attributed success of surplus collection of water tariffs to their tactic of involving religious heads to make people aware about the importance of paying water dues.
