Panchayat polls likely to set ball rolling for J&K's trifurication

JAMMU, Sept 15: New Delhi considering the proposal to divide Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh into union territories has pushed the Kashmir centric parties on the back foot.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party were of the opinion that their threat to boycott the forthcoming panchayat and municipal polls would make New Delhi surrender before them. "However, Centre did not give any importance to the tantrums which were thrown by these party leaders," he added.
He said that the Kashmir centric parties have realized that they cannot dictate terms anymore as the Government of India has decided to clip their wings. "Holding Panchayat polls in J&K was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the ramparts of Redfort during his Independence Day speech. One can realize the importance of these forthcoming polls as these were announced by none other than the Prime Minister," he said.
A Kashmir watcher said, "The Kashmir centric parties have always been pampered by the rulers in New Delhi but the PM Modi had reversed that policy and has made them realize that they are no VIPs."
He said that reports about trifurcating Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh have left the Kashmiri politicians guessing as they have always ruled the state with or without the mandate of people. "Memories of 1987 assembly elections which were rigged at that point of time are still afresh in the minds of people," he added.
A politician said that Kashmir centric parties have been claiming that situation is not conducive for holding elections. "They have been creating this notion just to pressurize New Delhi to help them win the polls. It's just a stunt at aimed at intimidating Delhi to help them win the polls," the politician added.
One of the PDP rebel leaders, who returned to his party fold, while talking to Early Times said, "I can for see the trifurcation of J&K. Central government has decided to play the final shot. Kashmiri politicians should realize that they are on the weak wicket."
Another analyst said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi goes for the trifurcation of the state it would resolve the Kashmir problem once for all and it would confine Kashmir centric parties within the Valley. "Notification for Panchayat polls is likely to be issued within a few days. These polls would set the process of empowering Jammu and Ladakh regions," he added.
