NC PDP boycott may not help BJP to win ULB polls in Kashmir
9/21/2018 10:41:45 PM
While the security forces were engaged in upgrading the security cover to ensure peaceful polling what seems improbable is the fact that over 860 candidates have applied for BJP ticket for contesting the municipal elections in the Kashmir valley. Not only men but women too have been in the front row to seek BJP ticket. This is the next result of the poll boycott announced by the National Conference, PDP and the CPI(M). Over 15000 security personnel, which were deployed for securing the lives of Amarnath pilgrims, have been redeployed for ensuing peaceful ULB elections. Indications are that the senior functionaries of the security forces were conducting area and polling booth wise assessment to work out adequate security arrangements for polling stations and chalk out contingency plans to deal with law and order problems in sensitive areas of the strife-torn Kashmir ahead of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls scheduled from next month. Sources in the security establishment said police and paramilitary CRPF officials were holding coordination meetings at police station level, district and zone level to discuss security arrangements for the upcoming elections. "Every polling booth and block will be assessed. After assessment, adequate forces will be deployed based on the sensitivity of the area and polling booth," they said.
Security arrangements would be finalised keeping in view the sensitivity of different areas. "The deployment plans will be made according to the requirement. On the categorisation of polling booths, it was indicated that the exercise was in progress. The conduct of elections, in a peaceful manner was the biggest concern. While the security arrangements were being finalized protesters damaged three Panchayat ghars in south Kashmir as a mark of protest against the holding of the ULB and Panchayat elections. Security forces have been told to check this menace as it would encourage protesters to make a bone fire of many Panchayat ghars. But the entry of the Congress in the field to contest the ULB and Panchayat polls will prove a major hurdle for the BJP to expect a cake walk win the elections. Majority of people will prefer the Congress to the BJP in the absence of the NC and the PDP. That is why the BJP's fate bank on the success of the Congress.
This is another development. The first being in the shape of BJP making inroads in the Kashmir valley and indications are that if BJP candidates were not attacked the party could win a number of seats in the ULB elections and the Panchayat polls. Once this happened it may be for the first time for the BJP to score poll victory that too in the Kashmir valley where the BJP has been treated as a touch me not flower. This is all possible for the BJP because of the boycott announced by the National Conference and the PDP. This way the Panthers Party too could make its presence felt in the region of Jammu where it will be the first to score a victory against the BJP.
