Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 27: Five persons including three militants and an army man were killed in separate militancy related incidents in the Kashmir valley today. One among the three slain militants was a former Special Police Officer (SPO).
Reports said that police and security forces cordoned off the Panzan village in the Chadoora area in Central Kashmir's Budgam district after receiving inputs that some militants are hiding in a mosque there. As the area was being cordoned the hiding militants fired upon police and security forces thus leading to an encounter between the two sides.
The gunfight carried on for some hours and culminated in the afternoon with the killing of two militants. The slain militants were identified as Sheeraz Ahmad Bhat, resident of Kralwari-Chadoora, Budgam and Irfan Ahmad Dar, resident of Kakapora-Pulwama. A police spokesman said that in the Panzan encounter security forces killed two militants identified as Sheeraz Ahmad Bhat resident of Kralwari-Chadoora and Irfan Ahmad Dar, resident of Kakapora-Pulwama. He said the militants owed allegiance with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). He said that Irfan was working as SPO and had deserted a couple of months ago.
"Pertinently, the militants fired on a search party from a nearby mosque and subsequently the area was taken into cordon. The local Auqaf Committee was engaged to convince the militants to come out. Security forces also appealed the militants to come out, however, the militants turned down the offer," said the police spokesman.
The spokesman said that the operation had to be carried out in a deliberate manner keeping intact the sanctity of the mosque. In this operation, one security forces' jawan also sustained bullet injuries and was evacuated to hospital for medical treatment. A militant belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba was killed during an encounter with police and security forces at Qazigund in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The slain militant was a local and according to police he was wanted in many militancy related incidents in South Kashmir. "Police and security forces in the wee hours today launched a search operation at Qazigund -Dooru in District Anantnag. During the searches, encounter started off between security forces and militants. In the ensuing encounter a local militant identified as Asif Malik who was operating as commander of a proscribed terror outfit LeT was eliminated," said a police spokesman.
The spokesman said that Asif was involved in several attacks on security forces including the killing of CRPF men at Achabal this year and in many other cases of civilian atrocities. One security forces jawan identified as Happy Singh of 19 RR also attained martyrdom in the encounter. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. The spokesman said that in another incident at Noorbagh in Srinagar city, security forces acting on a credible input cordoned a cluster of houses where the hiding militants fired indiscriminately resulting in death of an individual identified as Saleem Malik son of Mohammad Yaqoob Malik. However, the locals alleged that Saleem died due to the firing of security forces.
In the meantime, Police claimed to have arrested a man and recovered a pistol from his possession in Baramulla district of north Kashmir. Arif Hussain Lone a resident of Nowpora Jageer was apprehended along with pistol at Mir Mohalla in Kreeri-Baramulla, an official said. A case under Arms Act was registered against Lone in police station Kreeri.
