Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, Nov 1: Much before the onset of winter, scores of villages are without electricity from past several days, and the bad condition of roads has added to the problems for the far flung areas of this north Kashmir district.
The remote villages of this north Kashmir district are facing acute shortage of power.
The consumers said the power supply was erratic from past many days and voltage was also low.
Residents of (Kandi belt), the upper reaches of Baramulla district while talking to early times said, "at many places in the upper reaches the power supply lines are either tied to wooden poles and trees and they were lying naked and posing a serious danger to humans and livestock".
Nazir Ahmad from Darwa said that power is available merely for few hours despite of paying a monthly power tariff on regular basis.
"The voltage is so low that it fails to illuminate even a small room. We are having no choice but to take dinner in candlelight, and it gives tough time to the children to prepare for the board examinations", said Nazir.
Another resident of Kachew Muqam, Fayaz Ahmad said that there were many far flung villages that had not seen electricity so far, and PDD had not enlisted these far flung areas without electricity or for the repair as in most villages no repairs have been done since the electrification scheme was launched decades back.
However a group of students told ET that power is playing hide and seek and during night hours, the supply goes off for hours. They said they cannot study till late hours as University and Board exams have begun and unscheduled curtailment has frustrated them at large.
Sources in the PDD said that due to the lack of installation infrastructure, there are many far flung villages that will be connected with the nearest poser grid, so that their problems will come to an end, and they will also have uninterrupted power supply like other villages.
He however, denied that there was any portable wire lying naked and posing a serious danger to humans.
