#Me too Movement is an Extra, Unreal and Exclusive Platform of women Representation
11/8/2018 8:44:40 PM
Hakim Singh

#Me too movement has been hardly any impact on ground where majority of people are religious and believe in the omnipresence of God. The movement is equally failed to address the issues on ground where majority of women are illiterate, uneducated, emblem of individual and collective honour, living a life of prostitute, live in rural areas and above all disconnected with social media. It hardly penetrates into the basic issues causing sexual harassment of a woman. The movement needs to consider unequal world into the consideration which empowers one to dominate, manipulate and harass other and weaken other to accept all such dominations unquestioningly. For instance, are the heads of system ready to accept its basic flaws of enabling one gender to harass the other proudly for self satisfaction and weakening other to quit her life for getting harassed under the shame for none of her fault?, or would have been all the cases converted into Me Too if both male and female had equal power in the family, society, politics or other domains of life if yes....why are there majority of sexual harassments cases against male only and none of Me too cases against female? The one sided phenomena of either harassing or being harassed is simply an outcome of the unequal status of male and female in the society really making the female a sufferer. Therefore, the fundamental issues viz. Inequality, injustice, religiosity (blind faith), poverty, and illiteracy, rural and urban gap, ignorance, insecurity, castism, patriarchy etc. entrenched in a corrupt, irresponsible and unaccountable political and administrative system needs to be resolved on priority basis to address woman sexual harassment completely. #Me Too movement as an extra and surface level platform should not also divert the human thinking from the original issues while dealing with the sexual harassment. And how the movement is an extra surface level platform of woman representation can be justified as follows:
The First issue that makes the movement extra is its unconcern for religiosity (Blind Faith) of people-a force behind all sufferings of women. According to global studies on atheism, there are 93 percent of theists agreeing upon the omnipresence of God and his will behind all events happening in this world. With this belief among the majority of people it becomes very difficult to deal the question of sexual harassment against woman as an independent activity of man. A woman being a theist hardly recognises her position in a given society. The religion prevents her to assert against the exploitation to realise herself as a complete human being. It prevents a lady from acting as rational being to interpret the things on the basis of her experiences and is used by the male to justify his domination over the female. Secondly, in Indian context it doesn't address the 35 percent of illiterate and majority of uneducated (difficult to locate) women incapable to understand the social media discourse to assert their issues. Thirdly, the movement isolates a large chunk of women population disconnected with internet facility due to lack of internet accessibility, mobile phone/tablet/computer etc. or so many other factors curtailing them to express their stories on social media. Fourthly, it is hardly accessible to socio- economically poor women spend their whole day within either the kitchens or look after their young children/old people and work outside without having any control over her labour and wages. Fifthly, the scope of Me Too movement has never covered the cases of majority of women who had have been treated as a burden within the family and later is sold to economically empowered men in the name of marriage against their will. These women are hardly literate or educated to become economically, socially and politically self sufficient or free but infact to hire a high customer for marriage. So there has been hardly any woman writing #Me too against their bully parents and relatives compel a girl to get marry against her will and issue a licence of rape. Sixthly, it also neglects sexual freedom of a woman to locate the accusation properly whether it is made for hurting her individual will or collective will (of community) imposed on her.
Therefore, at the end the movement can be called 'Unreal, Exclusive and above all an extra platform as it hardly goes into the depths of subjugation of women or touches the larger part of reality prevailed in the society where a victim needs visible support and training to assert her against the unjust system in general and sexual harassment in particular. For instance, in Me Too cases media reached after someone has narrated her story but the nature of society demands activism of media to recognize a woman and train/educate her to identify the victimization as every woman cannot initiate her case on Me Too independently. Hence, a care need to be taken to enlarge the area of movement by keeping it intact with original and fundamental issues to empower a common woman a self sufficient in expressing and protecting her will in a society at large. Till now the movement can be seen largely as an 'extra platform' helping only a few kinds of educated, celebrated elite above all having enough leisure to use social media. And the women asserting through #Me Too are vocal only due to their some sort of familiarity or popularity on the virtual world. For instance, a bold and fearless expression of grievances may happen only if there is sort of surety about support, love and sympathy from the public also- This is how a simple common unpopular girl even connected with social media is unable to express her case.
