Will PM Modi accept Omar's challenge?
1/31/2019 12:56:51 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 30: Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah has thrown an open challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government to hold parliamentary and assembly polls together in J&K.
"Omar daring Centre to conduct both the polls simultaneously has unnerved the Peoples Democratic Party and the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party as both the parties want to buy the time. Leaders of both the parties have put up a brave face and have dismissed the Omar's claim that they are not prepared for the elections but they know it very well that if assembly polls are held along with the parliamentary polls they may end up losing their face," said an analyst.
He said that BJP and PDP are aware about the fact the people, who came out in droves to vote for both these parties in 2014 assembly polls, are unhappy with the leaders of both the parties. "The PDP-BJP coalition during its three year rule in Jammu and Kashmir couldn't do much for the people. After assuming power the BJP and PDP leaders became inaccessible and forgot the promises which they had made to the people. BJP high command is aware about the ground situation. Leaders sitting in national capital are aware about the dismal performance of the BJP leaders. They know it very well that people of Jammu region stand disillusioned and have lost faith on the BJP leaders," the analyst added.
A Kashmir watcher said that PDP on the other hand is in dire straits as most of the leaders have left the party and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is grappling with number of issues. "She is putting up a brave face but she also knows it very well that her party is on the crossroads and early assembly elections won't help her cause."
He said that Omar by insisting that assembly elections should be held along with the parliamentary polls is trying to push the Centre to the edge. "Omar knows that early assembly elections would weaken the BJP and the PDP. However, someone needs to tell Omar that his party too is also on the weak wicket as people in the Valley are yearning for a change as they are fed up with the traditional political parties and want new faces to come forward," the Kashmir watcher added.
He said that ball is in the court of the central government and it has to take a call "Omar needs to show some patience and concentrate on reaching out to the people," he added.
