'Champions of human rights' silent on woman's killing by militants
2/2/2019 11:07:16 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: The so-called champions of human rights in Kashmir, who otherwise look for excuses to corner security forces for "human rights violations" are silent over the gruesome killing of a woman by militants in Shopian.
Two days have passed since the bullet-riddled body of Ishrat Muneer-reportedly a maternal cousin of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Zeenat-ul-Islam-was found in Draggad village of the district in south Kashmir.
But from the mainstream parties like to National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party to the separatists, most of the influential faces in Kashmir are silent because this time the fault lies on Pakistan and its proxies.
The PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, who recently told media that Kashmiri militants are "son of the soil" and that government should hold talks with them has been silent on the killing of fellow woman in south Kashmir that also happens to be the PDP stronghold.
"Atleast she (Mehbooba) should have mustered courage to speak against the killing as her silence has send a bad signal," said a resident of Shopian.
Sources said the mainstream political parties don't want to displease Pakistan and their proxies in Kashmir ahead of the elections.
"Ahead of elections these regional parties behave like extension of Hurriyat and thus wont speak," said a source close to the Hurriyat.
The separatist camp has been silent on the killing as if nothing has happened in Kashmir.
Interestingly, the Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Geelani and Muhammad Yasin Malik have avoided even mention of the incident though they issued statements condemning "rights abuse by government forces in Kashmir."
The so called civil society of Kashmir is also silent.
A top business leader of Kashmir, who is close to separatists, has also been silent.
A Kashmir University teacher said the silence of Kashmir has exposed the doublespeak of their leaders.
"When you don't speak up even on the killing of woman, it only conveys that conscience of Kashmiri people is dead," he said.
