Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 16: Jammu and Kashmir Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board seems to be least bothered to take up genuine issues of labour class to improve their working conditions and get them their legitimate rights.
Sources told Early Times that Jammu and Kashmir Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, which is responsible to sort out the issues of workers working in building construction and for which important meetings of the Contract Labour Advisory Board meeting and ESI Regional Board have to be called by the JKBOWC Welfare Board.
"It has been more than 10 years since the meeting of Contract Labour Advisory Board and around 4 years since the meeting of ESI Regional Board was held, which are mandatory to be called periodically to take vital decisions for the welfare of labour class," they said.
They further said that apart of from other issues, the JKBOWC Welfare Board has miserably failed to collect 1% mandatory cess under Building Construction Workers Welfare Cess Act by the Municipal Corporation Jammu, Srinagar and JDA.
"Even the salary of data entry operators working in board has not been paid from the last more than 6 months. Moreover, these operators are being given wages of semi skilled category instead of high skilled category under minimum wages", they said.
"There are many issues of workers related to hassle free medical facilities which have to be discussed in the meeting, including empanelment of hospitals, the issue of facilities of lab tests at dispensary level which have otherwise to be done at hospitals making the patients in distress to get tests done," they said.
