Farmers-Scientists Interaction prog organised

JAMMU, Feb 28: Department of Agriculture and Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu(SKUAST-J) organised one day long farmer-scientist interaction under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme here at Granmore village of Reasi district which was attended enthuastically by a large number of farmers of the area. Romesh Kumar Khosa, Deputy Director, ATMA, Reasi inaugurated the programme with the warm welcome of the participants.
While inaugurating the programme he suggested the farmers that they should divert themselves from the subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture. He said that farmers should take the opportunities to become the agri-entrepreneurs and by doing so they can enhance their income and employment. He urged the farmers to consult with the KVK scientists before implementing the new technologies.
Dr.Banarsi Lal, Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi talked in length about the strategies to enhance the income of the farmers. He interacted with the farmers and replied their quarries during the interactive session.
While interacting with the farmers he said the farmers that by scientific agriculture they can increase their crops production and raise their socio-economic status.
He highlighted Integrated Farming System (IFS) for the livelihood improvement of the farming community. He stressed on commercial organic farming and added that hilly areas have immense scope in organic farming and farmers can fetch more prices by growing the organic crops.
He highlighted the eco-friendly agricultural technologies for the organic farming. He recommended certain biofungicides and biopesticides for the management of insect-pests and diseases in the organic crops.
He further said that by forming Self Help Groups' (SHGs) farmers can start the agri-entrepreneurship by getting the micro-finance from the commercial banks.
He educated the farmers on scientific cultivation of turmeric, ginger, lemon grass, palmarosa, marigold etc. cultivation as these crops are not affected by the monkeys.
He further narrated that the cultivation of these crops can help them to generate extra income and employment.
He emphasized on the value addition in different fruit and vegetables crops by which the farmers can double their farm income. He stressed on the efficient agricultural marketing to enhance the income of the farmers.
