Will solid waste still go into Hokersar?
After NGTs intervention

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 13: As National Green Tribunal (NGT) has intervened into destruction of Kashmir's three major wetlands, will authorities continue to dump all the municipal solid waste in Hokersar wetland? NGT in addition to Wullar and Pampore wetlands has taken cognizance of Hokersar wetland located in Budgam and parts of Srinagar.
As reported NGT's three member bench headed by Justice A K Goel on Tuesday shot a notice to Deputy Commissioner Budgam along with Pollution Control Board and J&K Wildlife Conservation Department and sought a detailed report from them within 2 months. A petition has been filed by RTI Activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat before NGT in this regard. Pertinent to mention that the Municipal Solid Waste collected from several areas of Parimpora fruit Mandi, HMT and Shalteng areas is being dumped into the world famous Hokersar wetland in Srinagar outskirts. Local residents in Sharifabad and Haji Bagh areas located near Hokersar in Budgam allege that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is using the wetland for dumping its municipal solid waste that is causing a serious threat to this wetland which is an internationally acclaimed Ramsar site.
Few years back Early Times had exposed SMC for dumping solid waste in Hokersar , but the activity is not at all coming to an end. Early Times reporter along with photographer visited several spots of Hokersar right from Sharifabad to Soibugh on Friday and more than one dozen garbage dumps were found on Srinagar Soibugh road. Locals allege that SMC is using the place to dump municipal waste. As reported last year the pictures of the Hokersar dump site had been clicked by a senior Indian Forest Officer (IFS office) who had posted them on his facebook wall and castigated the agency (SMC) which dumps the trash without naming it. Two years down the line the activity has not been stopped.
