Jammu, Apr 21: Despite getting approval from University Council, the administration of University of Jammu (JU) has utterly failed to start diploma in media studies.
Reliable sources informed Early Times that in the two University Council meetings held in 2004 and 2008, the council had given nod for the establishment of media studies centre but given the nonchalant attitude of successive Vice Chancellors, the much awaited media centre has not been started yet.
"During the two council meetings, the administration of university concerned announced that in the coming days the varsity is going to start one year diploma in media studies and also announced that the new centre would be development on the pattern of A J Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi or Indian Institute of Mass Communication of New Delhi but after lapse of more than a decade, the authority seems reluctant to start the diploma due to unknown reasons", said sources.
The proposal of opening of Media Studies Centre was introduced before the council by the former Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu, Amitabh Mattoo but his successor did not dothe needful.
The sources further said that just after the establishment of Central University of Jammu (CUJ) started the two year degree programme from 2014 hundreds of students have completed their degree and succeeded to get jobs in national and local media houses but University of Jammu only passed the resolution but failed to execute them.
In Kashmir region, the media as subject has been introduced at Higher Secondary level, four colleges, three Universities have the media department and hundreds of Journalist got famous at national and international platform by getting degrees from these institutions.
The callous approach of JU can be gauged from this fact that despite mass media having grown iver the years, the JU is yet to wake up.
