Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 16: The administration in Kashmir has failed to retrieve thousands of kanals of State land grabbed by musclemen and land grabbers in Valley.
According to sources thousands of kanals of land has been encroached in the Valley by land mafia active in different parts of Valley in connivance with revenue officials.
Sources said despite standing orders of Apex Court the authorities in Valley have failed to act against land mafia and retrieve the State land grabbed by them.
They said due to increased land grabbing, the authorities are unable to find the land for construction of Government buildings. Sources said even the land of rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and irrigation canals as well as flood channels have been encroached by mafia. This has led to problems to people but the authorities are not going to implement the instructions passed by courts and other organistions from time to time.
Sources said the administration was directed to cut all the trees grown in water bodies and irrigation kulls (small canal) for proper flow of water but on ground the same was not implemented by law enforcing agencies.
Sources said present position is so grave that people in various areas don't get water for irrigating the land.
Sources said Hakursar nallah in outskirts of city which is an old water body has completely encroached by mafia by filling up the marshy land with mud and boulders to convert it into residential area. The plots so made are sold on exorbitant prices by land mafia who are very influential people and also enjoy political patronage. Sources said as high level politicians are involved in grabbing this land the successive governments avoided action against them.
Sources said taking undue advantage of terrorism the mafia is making hey days in Valley at the cost of common Kashmiris.
