Tell me why was I defeated in Amethi? Rahul
6/1/2019 11:29:09 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, June 1: AICC president Rahul Gandhi is in a state of shock since May 23, when the Election Commission declared him defeated and BJP's Smriti Irani a winner from the Amethi parliamentary constituency. Ever since then, he has not talked to media persons. On the other hand, he has constituted a team of his men to find what led to his debacle in Amethi, one of the bastions of the Gandhi family.
Reports from Delhi suggest that Rahul Gandhi has sent a team to the Amethi constituency to "know the reasons behind people rejecting him and the Congress in a constituency" that had been returning Gandhi after Gandhi to the Lok Sabha.
Rahul Gandhi was defeated by BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi by over 50,000 votes. In 2014, Rahul Gandhi had defeated her with a margin of over one lakh votes.
AICC secretary Zubair Khan and party's Raebareli in-charge KL Sharma are among the team sent by Rahul Gandhi. Both Khan and Sharma are directed to submit the report on the factors that led to the defeat of Rahul Gandhi as early as possible.
Soon after the party's humiliating defeat in the 2019 general election, Rahul Gandhi is reportedly not keen on continuing as the Congress president. Instead, he, according to sources, "is pressing for a non-Gandhi to be appointed as party's chief".
The Congress, which could win only 52 seats, is now at the mercy of the ruling dispensation, BJP-led NDA, to occupy the seat of Leader of Opposition as the party failed to win at least 10 per cent of the total elected members in the Lok Sabha.
