MPEJ demands amendment in Panchayati Raj Act before BDC elections
7/11/2019 11:53:54 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 11: Movement for Peace, Equality & Justice (MPEJ) has demanded suitable amendment in the latest amended state Panchayati Raj Act before announcement of BDC elections.
MPEJ member Kuldeep Kumar Rao said that one clause in the amended state constitution regarding Block Development Councils (BDCs) and District Planning & Development Boards that was introduced by Congress and NC, says that the Councilors and Chairmen would only be women who should necessarily be from SC/ST which was followed by PDP and BJP. If this is implemented, only uneducated and simple women will be elected as majority of educated SC/ST women are either government service or are not willing to assume this office. It has been done only to create "yes-woman" officers/ representatives who could be easily made to dance to the tune of the politicians. This debars educated, competent and deserving candidate from contesting the election of BDCs District Planning & Development Boards in the state which harms true democracy. He urged upon the Governor to amend the Panchayati Raj Act, in such a manner that any person or woman may file his/her nomination for BDCs whose name is entered in any Panchayat Halqa in that Block.
